Pidhirtsy Castle

Pidhirtsy (Podhorce) castle may be but a shadow of its former self - the last owners wisely jumped ship in 1939, and the interior was gutted by a fire in 1956. But even in its ravaged form this is still one of the glories of the region. The castle was a residence of the princely Sanguszko family for many generations. In more recent times Jerzy Hoffman filmed here for his smash historical epic, 'Potop' (The Deluge). The castle's setting at the crest of a valley makes this a good summer picnic option. The complex itself is gradually being renovated by Lviv's Gallery of Art. There are no direct buses from Lviv, so the best bet is to take a bus towards Brody, changing at Yaseniv village towards Zolochiv.

Pidhirtsy Castle

"Sorry, I just left feedback for the wrong castle (it was for Zolochyk). Pidhirtsy was our favorite! Straight out of a Hollywood movie. With a long tree-lined driveway, a courtyard behind the walls, a mote, grand staircases, spectacular views from the balcony. One can imagine nobility exiting the palace onto the back balcony (the size of a football) to wave to their guests in their "backyard." The dilapidated state aids in visualizing the place in its prime. Hopefully, the renovations will enhance one's imagination even more."

"We visited this castle in July 2006. Interesting facts were given by our guide about the use of this castle as a prison. I am trying to find further information online about this place. "
