There were jubilant scenes in Lviv's bars yesterday as Ukraine fought their way through to the quarter finals of the World Cup. It was a brave performance from the Ukrainians, who clung on through 120 minutes of play against the Swiss until the dreaded penalty showdown.

When star striker Andriy Shevchenko missed the first penalty, things began to look decidedly bleak for the blue and yellow boys. But they held their nerve, scoring three consecutive penalties whilst the Swiss bungled a string of shots.

It's the first time that Ukraine has played as a team at the World Cup, and the players have already done enough to warrant hero status back home. We'll be cheering the boys on at this Friday's showdown with Italy - a hard nut to crack, but who knows what the good Lord has planned.....
