Vilnius Festivals

Whilst it's always worth looking out for one-off events at the Opera, the Philharmonic Hall, and Lviv's many museums, travellers will be pleased to hear that there are several major annual events to look forward to as well. These draw cultured cats from far and wide, so you can throw yourself into the spirit of things in true Fred Astaire style. So without further ado, here's a rundown of all that's cooking in Lviv's cultural calendar:

'Virtuosi' Music Festival

First up is this Spring special, which brings all kinds of melodious magnificence to town. Although the title of the festival brings to mind earnest young fiddlers, the Virtuosi is in fact a very elastic affair. Expect everything from modern pop to folk frolics, and all kinds of experimental stuff to boot. The main base for the festival is the Philharmonic Hall.

Zoloty Telesyk
International Puppet Theatre Festival

Well, Lviv is something of a fairy-tale city from an architectural point of view, and children have been flocking to the grand old puppet theatre for several generations now. The festival itself is named after 'Telesyk', a much-loved figure in Ukrainian folk-lore. The event usually kicks off in May, and is held, of course, at the Puppet theatre itself (1 Danyla Galickogo Square).

'Zoloty Lev'
Golden Lion Theatre Festival

Since 1989, Lviv's Golden Autumn has had one further string to its bow, with this festival of dramatic delights. Actors, directors and producers will be descending from across Ukraine and beyond to weave their magic in the old Habsburg capital.

'Salomea Kryshelnytska'
Festival of Opera Art

Few cities can boast as fine an Opera House as Lviv, and this festival aims to get the very best out of that edifice. Held in November, the event is the perfect antidote to those early Winter blues, so head on down to the Opera and join in the fun. The festival is named in honour of legendary pre-war chanteuse Salomea Krushelnytska, who regularly brought the house down at venues across Europe.
